Half stock ideas??
« on: April 17, 2017, 03:14:05 AM »
So, I couldn't just let those Cherry half stock planks sit on the classifieds...

I bought  it figuring I could learn to build from a plank and "rebuild" my TC Hawken with it since I butchered the stock.

Anyways, I think my better option is to part it out and buy new.

The plank is 2" think so somewhat limited.

I am not really concerned about a bench copy or anything.  I am planning to inlet it all by hand. Barrel included.

I don't have a small bore.  Was thinking maybe a 32" (or so?) tapered 32 or 36 caliber.  But then got to thinking that maybe the shorter sight plane would hinder it's effectiveness as a squirrel rifle. But I don't know?  Never played with one.

Figured you guys may have some ideas.  Maybe some pics of your half stocks.

Right now, a small bore is appealing as I don't have one.

Sounds like it's time for a new Rice squirrel barrel?

I think a .32, .36 or even a .40 would be good.  A 38" barrel looks good to me.  I would go with 7/8" or maybe a 13/16".  Good DST's.  Some generic trigger guard and buttplate would round it out.
For locks the Davis Goulcher, Squirrel or the Silar Mountain would be good choices.

Did some searches and really think that the cherry half stock is going to be a "squirrel rifle".

Leaning towards 36cal.

Rice's website says only straight 1" and larger are in production.  So, probably order through FCI. I'm in no hurry and plan to order a pistol barrel from FCI as well.

Would a straight barrel be alright say 38" in 36cal?  I have a 1" 50cal and it's heavy and front heavy.  I don't mind the front heaviness. And the weight won't be as great so I THINK a straight barrel will work for this.

After digging through the search function, I found some half stock squirrel rifles made by our members that pushed me towards that direction.  I don't have one and now have the plank. Will make a fun little rifle I think.

I'm in no hurry and going to plan this out as much as I can and try to produce as nice of rifle as I can. Probably be a while before I even start.  Looking for a house and trying to avoid starting a project before I find one and move in....But, I am planning my next few builds and gathering parts as I see them lol.   This site helps there!

Thanx little Joe!

Looked back over the site and read that wrong.

Now to decide between Rice and FCI.  From what I gather on here, I can't go wrong either way. And can get the pistol barrel from either.

Probably get them ordered here real soon.

You could go with a 3/4 inch barrel too.It should be lighter weight.
