We use 1095 steel that is re-carburized to boost the surface carbon content.

Here's a still shot from the above video. The frizzen is partially open. Notice the concentration of sparks in the pan.

That is super good Jim. I haven't seen a lock spark like that for many years. I always recarburize my frizzens mostly because I anneal them to engrave and then must re harden them. But they always spark better than when straight from the source.
