We had fun.  Lots of rifle talk and hunting talk and then to the stands.

Those flinters did a number on those hogs.

"he reached in and found it under the gristle shield on the far side of the shoulder.  The ball had penetrated the both shoulders and the chest cavity stopping under the gristle/fat shield on the other side.  The gristle/fat shield is about 2-3" thick on this hog. " 


Great penetration.  Did the ball go through the gristle shield on entry?

I hit it just behind and above the front leg.  It may have hit the back part of the shield.  Didn't really look that close.  In deer season I had to trail a deer about 100yds. or so from shooting too far back with a .50cal. flinter.  I made sure on this hog that I hit far enough forward to break it down.  Last year I shot all the way through a hog from top to bottom including the spine with another .54.  It will do a job on them.  We saw some big boars on the night-time game camera that would make you want more rifle for a clean shoulder shot.

Looks like a Free Born inspired rifle nicely done.

The rifle was built by Tom Caster.  .54cal., 38" Colerain C weight barrel with a Chambers Early Ketland lock.  I use a thick patch and .526 ball for easy field loading.  The rifle is light and handy to carry.  It is the "Free Born " rifle he had for sale on here a few months back.

Brice, real glad to see you having fun with that "CasterBlaster" I sent you! I always figured it would be a fine hunting weapon, right from the planning stage. Nice hog! Keep up the good work.
