I used to own that gun. Is it a .29 with a 72 dated Roller lock?.....but maybe not, I think he probably built one of those a day back then...

:o :o...Hey, Mike.... Thanx... this one is not mine... was at the TN-KY rifle show in Knoxville a couple years ago... Jan Riser took photo...just sharing with Chuck to try to persuade him to include a taller hole.. HaHa.. !!!... was not for sale (of course),.. but I would like to find one that is....I like the look of HH early plain hog rifles....I think he used a lot of Green Mountain .45, 42" barrels back then..... I appreciate the talent and skill involved in making "fancy" rifles, but wish some still made this type......

Mine had a chrome lined 13/16" Bill Large .29 cal .HH told me there was a guy that had 5 of those Large .29's chromed and HH built them all in the mid 70's. The guy lived in the Chicago area.

I am curious, did he make more of these 29 Cal other than the chrome lined ones? I once owned an ash stocked 29 cal Bill Large barreled rifle. It shot well but never noticed whether it was chrome lined or not. I remember is was a smooth loading barrel.

I couldn't say. I didn't know this one was chrome lined untill HH told me.

I'm at the finishing stage with the rifle now. varnishing the stock with a mixture of home made turpentine varnish and oil based spar varnish thinned with turpentine. the varnish adds a little red brown color to the wood. its very humid here now, so I'm having to wait a long time between coats. it will take several days.

Have finished browning the metal parts with LMF. I let them go over 2 days without carding between coats. here are a couple picture.

I too enjoy the look of a plain, well constructed rifle and have built a couple myself.  Mainly because I don't have the talent to go to the next step.  That being said I am curious to find out  if there is anything that can be done to strengthen the toe area of a rifle to prevent splitting.

Needed to brown the iron to match the old, rusty barrel and tang. I think a lot of the Southern rifles were browned or rust blued to begin with. All of the originals I see have a thick brown finish now, anyway. Hot, humid weather will do that.

Remember that the cheekpiece should be concave, not convex. The suggestion to bring the wrist into more definition back into the buttstock is a good one too.

6 coats of varnish applied and dry. I sanded between coats with 220 and 400 grit paper.
Don't let the gloss bother you; I plan on handling and shooting the rifle for a month or two before ageing the stock. I wand to add a few dings and bumps, then some black, before rubbing out.

Had to go back and re varnish the stock, because I went through the finish in a couple places.

It's hard to to make myself "age" the wood after putting so much time into a nice varnish job.

I did proof test the barrel and run about 25 shots through the gun. It still has the original low sights installed, and they were close to being on target. The Hawken Shop flintlock went off fast and dependable, and I could hit as well as I could see, with all shots in the black and touching at 25 yards.
I used a .400" ball and .017" denim patch in the .408" bore.

Did some light "ageing". I may stop here. I don't really like the "black rifle" look I see on some guns.

That shiny has to go, otherwise it's a great gun.

The shine you see in the pictures is just a fresh coat of BLO rubbed over the steel wooled varnish to even out the finish. After it dried, I waxed the rifle with johnsons paste wax, and the shine is gone. Outdoor pictures also make it reflect more than it looks in person.

Thanks for all the help and comments! I plan on trying to take a deer or two with the rifle this fall in Tennessee.

Thanks, all. Still looking at the lines and sliming down the wood. I took your advice and dished the comb and cheek piece. I also slimed down the nose and took a little off the top and bottom of the fore arm, exposing a little more than 1/2 of the barrel flats and ramrod.
I made the double set, double acting triggers from scratch with a hacksaw and files. Made the springs from 1090 steel. Don't know how anyone can sell triggers for less than 200.00!
The trigger guard still needs a little filing around the braze joints.
I'll keep at it until it looks right. ;D
Chuck

When I read your line about cutting these triggers out with a hack saw and a file
I went and laid down on the couch as it made me tired to think of it.
You're right,I know I wouldn't make them for $200 either.

Reminds me of my favorite quote on the forums from Wade Patton to Runar (regarding Runar making a set of triggers).....

"Heck yeah. be a Boss, make a triggerset!"

:-)

Best wishes, and God Bless,  Marc
