 8) 8)... Thanx for the pic, Steve Diamond ..... Are all the shooters in photo identified...??? ... The second from left standing looks like Henry Pancake, or maybe Bird Freeman .....Second from right kneeling, with the long mountain match rifle, looks like a young Gilbert Angel ....Great photo.... I've seen it before, and can enlarge it on screen to see detail .... Thanx , Regards, CC Fiddler .....

Unfortunately the only shooter that is identified in the photo is the second from the right kneeling. It's Bill Large and the reason I'm sure of it is that one of Bill's daughters let me borrow it to scan into my computer. This was after Bill had passed away and the daughters would have an annual chunk gun shoot at Bill's range.

Having the range rod in the bore may have been a visible indicator of a "safe" condition for the rifle. ?????

Hanshi..."Ramrods that are just flush with the muzzle are often difficult for me to pull out especially when my hands happen to have prb lube on them.  I have a couple like that but mostly mine extend 1/2" or a bit more beyond the muzzle. "

Yup.  I have begun running the drill down the shaped stock before going to work on it and routinely filing three grooves in the tip because of this.

After every shot, my ram rod extends a bit beyond the muzzle - these are 'before' with flush, and the after picture, extending.  With a PC- hold down the crtl button and repeatedly push the + key. to return to normal size, hold the crtl button and push the zero (0) key.

I have built a few rods that were longer and stuck out past the muzzle about 3". I stopped doing this for the following reasons: the rod got hung up in the brush while hunting quite often and after a few shots fired with rod in place the end of the rod past the muzzle got quite charred. If continued for a long time you would burn the end of the rod off. The old
Pictures of the rifles with longer rods the rods do not appear to be burnt which makes me think the rods were not in place when the gun was fired. So maybe the longer rods were just used to load and clean but removed when the shot was made.

My two cents.......flush looks better but as always, its your gun, make it your way.I agree with them getting hung up in the bush.you can always screw an extension on kinda like a jag to give you that extra couple inches if your set on using your guns ram rod full time and not using a range rod/cleaning stick ect.

I usually use a wiping stick, it is longer than the ramrod and bigger since it doesn't have to fit the thimbles. It only has a jag on one end. If broken is much easier to replace than a nice tapered ramrod fit to the gun.
