Barrels in blanks
« on: July 27, 2017, 11:49:02 PM »
I have 2 blanks with barrels being inlet.

These are future builds. Depending on life...I could finish them both in a year...or it could be a couple years...

Was wondering if I should at least pin the barrels in the stocks?

Don't know if that's a good idea or bad?  Not sure that using tape or something would be enough.  Thought it may be worth the time to get them pinned.

Thanks!

Tape will probably be fine, but don't use that blue paper painter's tape without paper under it.  I used it to hold a barrel for about a week, and it pitted the metal surface under the tape.  Must be something in the adhesive for that tape.

I duct tape my barrels in their stocks once the stock is being worked, thinned, works fine. I am not so sure about a blank though, whether it would work well since wood that thick is going to move if it wants to. Worth trying though.

I secure barrel to wood with cordage (heavy cord) and use a clove hitch knot with an overhand knot to secure it. I tie it tight every 6 to 8 inches so the wood & barrel can not move. I also tie my hickory ramrods together into a bundle with this method so they do not warp.

If you don't want to pin, use Velcro every 6 inches or so.  I use that thin stuff they put on computer cables.  Won't scratch the barrel or the wood and holds it all in tight.

I have a 1" x 33" inletted into a half stock walnut blank held in place solidly by
a tri clamp. It holds from both sides and the top flat and I tell people that it
reflects my inability to locate the place for a flat cross key..

Just a thought but I use electrical tape. It doesn't leave any marks an holds real well.
 Other ideas may differ. Oldtravler

Thanx all!

I was worried about the thickness of the blank and not getting the pressure from tape...

Lashing it on with cordage is a great idea...couple minutes watching videos and I know you can create some power if you lay the cordage right....

I have another gun in the vice...figure right about when I'm ready to do its tennons my other 2 will be here and I could just do all 3 barrels and pin them all...I'm sure cutting dovetails and soldering tennons on 3 barrels will be 3x more fun than doing just 1 lol.

Really don't see it being a hassle to pin them now and be done with it..less I have to do when I get to them.  Just have to be a little careful with the pin placement as neither rifle is actually planned..but I'm not one that would loose sleep if the original makers pins we're spaced differently than mine..

i like to make slots in my lugs so wood movement does not split wood. In a blank i would worry that wood movement would bend pins and make them very difficult to remove if just using drilled holes. Is that a problem for anyone else

As my shop does not have any climate control i also have rusting issues if the barrels are left too long unprotected

I have been using tape for many years ...
I would recommend running a oil patch and then corking the muzzle to keep the dust and rust out ..

Time to get ready for Dixons ....

I would vote temporary method. That way you don't have to locate the pin holes yet. I hadn't thought about velcro.
