Is there any real need to crown a smooth bore barrel?

I would do it if you are going to shoot patched ball. Doesn't have to be a deep crown, just enough to kill the sharp edge at the muzzle.

On the same note a bit of a crown is nice for wads too...kinda holds them and pretty centered for you to send it down the bore.
Necessary? Probably not.

Definately break the sharp edge, a chamfer is enough. Round it with your thumb and emery paper. Just be sure the muzzle is square to the bore if you have shortened a existing barrel. BJH
