Barrel Wall Thickness
« on: August 06, 2017, 01:05:28 AM »
Hey guys, I was reading some older posts about barrel wall thickness and am in need of some opinions.  I recently came into possession of an older 13/16" Colerain barrel in .36 that someone had installed stake tennons in.  I had to remove them to use the barrel, long story short they were drilled pretty deep. According to my math, where the front tennon was I have .1240 left about 1 3/4" from the muzzle and there is .1125 at the center tennon. The stakes stayed in the rear tennon so I'm not sure about depth on this one.
The older posts give .1000-.1500 as a comfortable thickness and I measured my barrel thickness from a groove on the bottom flat so there's still the rifleing thickness too. I'm in the range, and being it's a .36 would you all be ok with this or would you just play it safe?

Something came off the rails. My name and no post. I would not be afraid of the 36 caliber
as you described it. I have seen and once owned a 1`3/16x45 and no trouble.
The load required for this small bore is not a 1000 yard charge .Probably about 40 grains and
a ball that weighs little.

I don't see any problem at all. It is almost impossible to blow out a round hole like a barrel tenon. If they are only .020 thick they would no blow out, there is just not that amount of pressure on that small of an area. .
Nobody is always correct, Not even me.

I agree with Jerry. These are just points. If it were a large dovetail with the same depth, then I'd worry.

May I assume this is a swamped barrel?would you folks pull the rear tennon to check its depth for peace of mind?
