Isaac Fine 1785- gunsmith 1850 Cocke County TN.  In 1850 he reported  he used 1000 pounds of iron & made 46 gunlocks & 46 rifles valued at 552 dollars & did 50 in repair work.

46 is one every 6-7 days. That would be a busy shop these days.

Avlrc, thanks for the info on the Fine gunsmiths. Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree. I have a southern rifle signed with block letters L F.  do you have any southern 'smiths in that book with those initials? Thanks, Ed

 8) 8)... Me likey TENNESSEE rifles...!!! .... can you post pix ..???  .....Dave Byrd has two excellent books on east Tennessee rifles.... Is your rifle an original antique Tennessee gun ..?? .... Leroy Fleenor up around Kingsport made many "poor boy" Tennessee rifles and some mighty fancy Pennsylvania style guns too ... Post pix if you can ... Regards, ...C C Fiddler ...... :D :D... As a P.S. .... Jerry Noble has a few good books and a large data base on Tennessee makers, too ... !!!!

Fiddler. I posted pics of this rifle when I acquired it a few years ago but PHOTOBUCKET has confiscated them for ransom!!!! Yes, the rifle is original and is clearly and uniquely marked and dated on the barrel, if only I could decipher the initials. I talked with Dave Byrd at that time and he was unsure of its maker. Dave recently contacted me and suggested the "Fine" family of gunsmiths so I posted here for info. I will get some new pics made this week and post again.....Ed
