Completed my first two rifles
« on: September 14, 2017, 05:45:24 PM »
I just finished my first and second rifle builds.  Not from planks, "parts sets".  I started the Isaac Haines but got lost.  I didn't realize that there is a whole lot of "know how" needed to building a muzzleloader.  I drove down to Alabama and took one of Mr. Jim Parker's gun building classes.  I purchased a Jim Chambers' Pennsylvania Fowler to build in the class.  It took me 5 days, 12 hours a day to get it put together.  I have a very high respect for all you skilled gun builders. Rifle building is an art form you don't learn with two rifles.  My hats off to you!

Below is a picture of my builds. I'm a little nervous showing my rifles with all the beautiful rifles that are shown on the site.
Top: Jim Chamber's Pennsylvania Fowler in 20ga., 46" barrel.
Bottom:  .50 cal. Isaac Haines parts kit.  I purchased from one of the forum members here.  Barrel and hard ware from TOTW and stock from Dunlap woodcrafts.  I have not had the courage to attempt any relief carving, wire inlay or patch boxes yet.  I did enjoy the builds and plan to do another.

Both of these guns came from good stock, and they will serve you very well for as long as you wish.  You've done well.

Hi Joe

You have done well with your projects. It was a pleasure having you attend one of my building classes and then see this fine work you have turned out.

I received your package yesterday and want to say thanks for the lock blocks you sent. I let Travis pick out the one he wanted and I will use the others in my future classes.

Email me a copy of your rifles that I can post on my web site.

Thanks Jim Parker

There is absolutely no reason to apologize for those two builds, JO49er; plain is good and I'd be proud to have done so well on both.  They are quite nice and I like them.

Very nice job on both. I wish my first one back in the Dark Ages of the 70's looked as good! Let us know how they shoot.

Those are both really good looking rifles from what I see. Very nice results for your first two builds.

Jim's teaching method inspires confidence.  I took his carving class, learned the basics, and gained the confidence to try my hand at carving.  My first attempt is far short of being good enough to get paid for doing it but not poor enough for me to rasp it off.  I should finish this rifle next week if we don't have any more storm related setbacks.

Joe, I think you are off to a running start.  But I will warn you that this gun building habit is addictive.  Keep up the good work.

Nicely done!  Kudos to you for taking Jim's class, that's about the best way of leveling out the learning curve somewhat.  Wish I had done the same when I first started out...  Thanks for posting!

That's nice work.  What stains and finishes did you use?
