Kids rifle?
« on: September 18, 2017, 06:22:36 PM »
I have been asked to build a small kids rifle for a 10year old. Never done one. They are looking for something basic-not expensive in .45cal. Ideas?
                       Thanks, Turtle

I seen mbs had some short (30~") octagon to round .45 rifled barrels online a while back, can't remember who made them.

Turtle,
A couple of years ago, I built a Lehigh for my grandson, using a cut down .40 cal Rice squirrel barrel.
Made a nice little rifle weighing about 5 lbs.
Not sure how to post a link, but do a search on this site for Little Lehigh if you'd like to see some photos.
Here's a photo.

I finished this little rifle from mid build for a guy (and just finished replacing all the PhotoBucket photos !).  It is a great size for a child but I can still shoot it comfortable as an adult:

I have a kid's rifle built by Mike Lange that fits lil' ol' me to perfection.  He made a good number of these in various styles and "might" have one left.  He's temporarily out of the building business due to building a new house.  So hopefully he'll start back in the near future.  His screen name is "mongrel", which he earned.  I've lost his contact info; so pm me if you're interested and I'll at least give you directions.  His guns are plain, working guns and he dislikes carving/engraving.

I think others have already hinted at what I'm going to say.  Whatever you end up making, I would make it of a size that an adult could still comfortably shoot it.  As any parent knows, they grow fast!  A true "Childs rifle" would be outgrown quickly.  Much better to make it slightly big and let them shoot it off a rest, that to have something that only fits them for about 3years, and is almost un-shootable as a teenager,.....which is normally when their interest level will begin rising drastically.
