Surprise shooting
« on: September 26, 2017, 05:05:36 AM »
I know the jury is still out on what method is best when shooting a rifle but some like to have the rifle go off and surprise them when it does. I'm one of those who would rather know when it's going to go off. These last few years it has been harder for me to do that because of the nerve damage in my hand and fingers, I don't have the feeling in my fingers because they are always numb. I'm sure others my age have some similar problems. What if anything can a shooter do to reverse that or is it some thing we just have to live with? For me it's worse when I wear gloves so when hunting I have to shoot without gloves which can be quite uncomfortable in the chilly north.

I don't have much sensitivity in my fingers any more either, hadn't given it much thought other than I notice I drop a lot of small parts because I can't feel them in my hand. Now I have another excuse for my poor match scores!

Can you increase the pull weight of the trigger?  Nothing egregious, of course, but just a few pounds more to give you more feel for controlling it.
If it was easy, everyone would do it.

Fingerless gloves help.  I have a pair of wool ones I got from a military surplus store, and a pair with fold over mitten ends.  I also have an insulated muff that straps around my waist, with room for a hand warmer.  Keep yer powder dry........robin  8)

My older daughter knitted me a pair of wool cloves, with the last 1/2" of the thumb and forefinger of the right left open.  These work really well for shooting in cold weather.

The only thing about pulling the trigger and getting ignition that surprises me is when a hole appears in the target!
