Flintlock Rifle
« on: October 25, 2017, 08:29:24 PM »
First I will thank you all for your help, advice and good meanings.

As you can see I have not found the metal screws already.
I will finish the rifle with Tru-Oil, this is very glossy, Is that all right for this rifle,
or do I need something else, something more frosted?
I made a silver sight
Later on I will make the rifling in the barrel and I will make the ramrod.

Nicely done.

The shiny True Oil finish is easily rubbed back, dulled, with 0000 steel wool, or pumice/rotten stone.

Make sure it is very dry/hard first.

Adrie,
What Daryl said is correct.  Also when  you post your pictures be sure to put something  next to your rifle because most people will not know that it is a miniature.  If your hand was not in one of the pictures  there would be no way to tell.   Great job, keep up the good work.

Amazing.  Like David said, if your hand wasn't there, it's a totally believable, full size rifle. Nice!

True oil is good stuff, but I started using Permalyn sealer finish from Laurel Mountain.  This gives a really nice finish and seems to hold up better than true oil. Btw that is some beautiful work you did!

That's excellent work!  Colonial gunsmiths, I believe, used a cooked linseed oil varnish with lead oxide dryer.  Tru-Oil is probably as close as one can get easily.

That is fine looking work.
I would not have known it was a miniature if not for your hand.
In this case since a durable finish is really not needed, maybe a BLO or similiar, rubbed way back.
Then a good waxing really gives a nice soft look.
It does away with any "cheap shoe shine" look as a friend of mine used to say.
Just a suggestion

And here I was thinking that he just had big giant hands :o
I like to use a tung oil finish. Tru oil is shiny and it can also make a thick finish, which you certainly don't want on a miniature .

Very nicely done  8) and as the others have said - I thought it was full size.  Your choice of finish is a good one nothing wrong with Tru-Oil and Permylin they both do a good job. With each they leave the stock glossy and if you want a subdued look you just have to rub it back. I use rottenstone and mineral oil or water to form a watery slurry and rub LIGHTLY with a felt pad until the sheen is knocked off.
