Should a SMR type iron patch box be annealed? Of so, by what method?

Thanks.

If you are making one out of mild steel, I would initially anneal it by heating it to a dull red, and burying it in warm ashes, or sand, for a few hours. Mild steel doesn’t work harden much, so the annealing is mostly to stress relieve it from the rolling process. It can then be formed to your specifications.

If already formed, no need to anneal.

If using mild steel, 1018 or equivalent and .040" to .050" thick or there bouts, I see no reason to anneal it as there is not enough carbon in the steel to start with.
