New Stand for Old Anvil

New anvil stand. After a few sessions of heavier forging and welding I determined my anvil height was too tall and the anvil wanted to twist and jump around on the stump so I fixed a new stand with some scrap lumber. I nailed a couple pieces of treated 1x8 on the bottom since it will rest on the dirt floor. I made two half moons out of inch poplar and chamfered the curved side to roughly correspond to the anvil bases taper. They are locked down with a 5/8 carriage bolt on each side and it is secure!

Thanks, I have really been enjoying it. After going from a little rivet forge outside I feel like I am in heaven. I have good coal and a nice deep tuyre, don't have to worry about the weather. I have been forging almost every evening this week. I can get welding heats no problem now. I have been tweaking things and getting set up. Moved my grindstone in this afternoon. Hope to get the bellows rebuilt soon and installed. Working tempoarily with hair dryer!

This is the best thing I have done for my self preservation. They say the best thing for arthritis is to keep moving. It is a lot easier to do if it is something you enjoy doing. I only wish I had made it larger. I was worried some about dirt floor, but find it is working out great. A lot easier on my feet than a solid floor. I wet the floor down ocasionally to keep down dust and find this also helps cool the shop down some.

Did you do the masonry work yourself? I've got something very similar planned.

Yes, I did it all good or bad. I laid it out like a fireplace, but if I were to do another I would make the hearth opening lower, (see the sheet iron fix I put in). It actually draws well, but until the chimney got good and warm it would smoke out some with a green coal fire. Lowering the hearth opening with the little metal hood fixes it pretty good. The big deep commercial tuyre is great.
 Just finished up my hinges and hung the shop doors today.

That's a very tidy looking smithy you have there! I have a dirt floor in mine, too. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
I have a second side door about 10 feet away from my forge. If I leave it open, my forge will smoke. As long as it's closed, no problem.

The shop I work sometimes at a museum has an open hearth forge with a hood. There are two doors and one window. It is set up with an anvil on either side of the forge. There is one window that if you open it sometimes it will smoke the smith on the other side out.

New doors temporarilly installed to check for fit. I will pull them back off and paint the doors then reinstall with nails I made for the purpose.

Beats my old bolts belted into the log and bent over around its ankles! LOL!  Must do it your way. Never thought of that!

Would you mind sending me some measurements of your anvil stand.  My son is doing very well at blacksmithing but his stump is outdoors and is rotting away.
