PLAIN SOUTHERN RIFLE
« on: November 17, 2017, 07:32:36 AM »
This semi poor boy rifle has no entry pipe, forend cap or side plate. The trigger guard, butt plate and thimbles are hand forged. this rifle is somewhat a copy of a rifle that Dennis Glazener has for sale on CLA. Comments welcome.

Jim, that's another fine looking rifle you've built there. Great architecture and furniture. Thanks for sharing.

Is that butt plate folded over or top and bottom brazed together? It looks folded but I can't tell for sure. I like the butt as it looks more comfortable to shoot than some of the deep curved styles. I like the rifle too.

That's a beauty! I really like the way you've beveled the grease hole, I may have to do that on mine.

I have a rifle made in the early 70's that has a grease hole like yours.  I like that a lot.  Very nice rifle.

Jim
I like that oval grease hole, I have never seen one turned that way but to me it would be more natural to use it like that than the way the Gillespie's turned theirs.

What type of finish did you put on the lock, barrel, trigger guard? It looks like everything was left bright. I'm viewing the pics on a small tablet so forgive me if it's obvious.

Please don't misunderstand, I think the rifle looks great. It's just sometimes on this small tablet I can't make out certain details. Thanks for replying!

That's a beaut.  I've been getting back into black powder and have fou nd myself attracted to two types of rifles; Plains/Mountain Rifles and the so clled "Poor Boy" Southern Rifle.  Again, that's a beaut!
