Building for the kids
« on: December 17, 2017, 11:19:02 PM »
Since my daughter received the last build it is the boys turn, so he decided he wants a new pistol. All of the rifles I have built my kids have been 100% handmade and this will be no exception. Had a day off work so we finished boring with the short bits today and ready for the long bit. As you see in the pictures other barrels are on the bench waiting their turn.... actually a few still require a little more forge work. Also a few pictures of some of the lock forging dies I use.

Very good sir. Still have one barrel blank welded and another half done awaiting. Still haven't built the boring bench yet. Too many projects, too little time. Would enjoy seeing more photos of your work.

Very nice! Looks like the spittin image of my mentors bench and bits. A little cheatin on the lectrik drill head being that we don't have apprentices to crank the wheel, but I still like it. ;)
What steel is your forging dies?

Angus, the forging dies are made from scrap tool steel from my work. Don't remember what they are exactly, d2? W1? I just don't remember.

David, here is the closest rifle at hand to photo. Forged barrel .50cal 7 groove 44" long swamped. The lock also came from the forging dies pictured earlier. No particular maker or school on this rifle, was just building something. This was made probably 8 years ago.

Very nicely done. I would love to have a set of dies to forge a lock. Looks much easier than doing it free hand

I love the lock!  How large is it (length and width)?

Thank you everyone for the kind remarks. Bob Roller that means an awful lot, thank you sir.
Bradbury, I do not have a picture of my forge, if I get home before dark one day I can get a picture.

Single Malt, the lock measures 5 13/16" long by 1"

Here is another quick picture of a piece and case (that needs finished)
