sitting fox fowler

Has any one built the American fowler from Sitting Fox. It seems like a decent deal. I normally build from a blank but would like to finish it in time for next hunting season. Are there any better options out there.

Chambers Pennsylvania Fowler makes up a real nice gun.

I did 10 or so years ago. No complaints and it's slain a bunch of turkeys and deer.

I think that SF kits are just  a collection of parts from various suppliers. Same as TOW and several others.

Their fowler barrel could be made from DOM stock and not have any taper to the breech section. Makes for a heavier section there, but is how they keep their cost of their kits down. Their parts are not inferior - same as you can source from other places, TOW, Mold&Gun Shop , etc. It is just that like for the barrels, they are not of ‘superior’ or better quality. Ray will upgrade for you though ...

I built one for a friend last year, who started to inlet (hog out) the barrel tang and decided he was in over his head. It wasn't easy but it turned out pretty good and I added a little carving to jazz it up for him. Parts were all good ones and the maple was a good hard piece with consistent curl. I didn't like the way it was pre-carved or inlet. The round barrel had to be inlet deeper and 5/16" further back to get a touch hole to line up with the lock pan. You need to file a flat on the side of the barrel where it mates up with the lock bolster and prior to drilling the touch hole. Seems like I had to provide the white lightning liner. Then the lock needed to be inlet deeper to be tight to the flat.
I had to putz around with the trigger, moving it back some to get a real nice trigger pull.
This effort just emphasized again why I would rather build from a blank than a kit. There were a LOT of little things that a beginner would have difficulty achieving without a lot of specific tools of the trade. It shoots accurately now that I bent the barrel to the left and the lock is a very good sparker! And he loves it!

In the 1970,s I used a 12 bore barrel from Sitting Fox to build a flintlock sporting gun in the English style .Over the years this gun has served me well at game shooting  and also pest control and is especially good at wood  pigeon shooting over decoys ,enclosed are images of the gun.
