Any one use L\R's side slapper lock? I have a possible project in mind that would use one. Just curious if any of the membership has used one. BJH

BJH, i have been shooting them for about 40 years. If you like percussion, nothing like them. No drum or anything like that to mess with. Make our own. Cheers! Mikeh

In the Huntington WV Museum of Art' gun collection there resides an OVER Hammer long rifle.
Apparently it is cocked by pushing the hammer spur with your thumb.Has anyone ever seen one of these?
There is also an Ellis sliding lock sporting rifle with 4 bolsters and I am assuming it's uses superposed loads.
Also assume the "top" load ought to be fired first and in hope that the thing doesn't Roman candle.

Hi BJ. Here are some pictures of the lock on my original Conrad Horn rifle. It would be pretty easy to make. All pinned together with only two screws.

I've had an L&R mule ear and it worked just fine.  Has a fly so you have a half cock unlike some others.  Has a leaf mainspring, but a small coil spring in the action.  Will interchange with the Durs Egg flint. I can recommend it.

Does the nipple size matter? Pistol or rifle?

Look by Mule Ear Lock on ALR,
Or ask in Google for Mule Ear Lock on your computer and select Pictures/Images.

Good luck

Uses a standard rifle nipple.

I'm using one on my current project. I just finished inletting it. Not nearly as easy as a conventional side lock to inlet because the lockplate is stepped. If I had to do it over, I would move it farther back towards the breach. I had to make a small notch on the bottom of the breachplug lug to clear the tip of the mainspring and the link that connects it to the hammer. I installed a conventional rifle nipple where I would normally but the vent liner.
The lock seems well made and properly hardened. Only a couple of moving parts. I'm eager to see how she shoots.

If you decide to use one, be careful with the layout to make sure the mainspring clears the breach plug.
