New life for a 16 gauge double
« on: December 23, 2017, 02:43:13 AM »
I finished this piece awhile back and thought I would post a few pictures for vieweing. I had this piece given to me a few years back. It had missing lock parts, the barrels were starting to come apart and needed rejoined. The back grip rail of the trigger guard was broken and missing as well as the front trigger missing. It was also missing the entry thimble which I made to fit the existing inlet as best as I could and lastly, although the bores are very decent with minimal pitting near the breech of the left barrel it also required a new breech on the left side. Stock was in very good shape but I did recut the checkering. Finally antiquing of the newer parts or where I welded the trigger guard back together.

Good job! I’ll bet rejoining the barrels was a chore not for the faint of heart!

Mark,  the job you did on the entry thimble alone is nothing short outstanding . The way you were able to match the patina as well as you did , to the rest of the piece , is very impressive . You are truly a gifted craftsman , and , it is always a pleasure to see your work. Nate

Excellent work, Mark!  I am glad to see you put the necessary heart and labor into the gun to bring it back to life, and share it here with us.  Great job at matching the patina, and very crisp checkering.

Fine looking restoration work you've done there. That's surely an art in itself. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice job.  Rescued a shotgun from the parts bins I am sure.

Thank you for the complements. It is graceful and swings like a dream and was even able to bag some doves earlier in the year.
