Lehigh folding leaf rear sight
« on: May 09, 2009, 01:36:49 AM »
My benevolent friend Tom Curran provided me with a photograph of the original rear sight from one of the MET Kuntz rifles, and i thought it so funky, I wanted one for my own rifle.  So here's the original, and the copy.  I'll look to see if I have one of the finished (browned) sight.

The vertical black line is felt pen.

Thanks for posting that photo, Taylor. That is a kinda cool, funky sight.
I like the way the leaf is beveled to rest on the standing part of the sight.

Here's a couple of the sight with the leaf up.  There's a flat spring dovetailed fore and aft into the bottom that applies pressure to the eccentric base of the leaf, and makes it snap gently into up or down.
As far as time to whittle it out, I can't remember - but it was hours, all of them enjoyable.  I haven't shot the rifle with the leaf up, so I don't know where it shoots.  I left it taller than the original deliberately, so I could file it down for - maybe 200 yds.

Well that was interesting...I put the new pics in with the first post in this thread...oh well, gets the info to you either way.

Taylor,
Nice sight!  I have a question for you regarding the third picture from the top.  It appears that the barrel "dovetail" rises significantly above the dovetail on the site.  How did you achieve that and what are the advantages?
Thanks in advance.
Glenn

Talyor, Did you handle the original? Im just asking because from the look of the original I couldnt tell if it was a friction lock that actually held the the front blade in postion everthing looks to be tapered the oppisite way, anyways nice looking sight....

All I've seen is a couple of excellent photos of the sight.  It's from the real fancy J. Kuntz rifle in the MET.  I doubt if Tom dared to flick the sight leaf up, so that will remain a mystery.  However, on my rendition, friction alone would not have served,so i added the little flat leaf spring.
yes, there is a lot of barrel steel bumped up to create the dovetail, but even more on the original.  I used a sharp cold chisel and a heavy hammer to raise the metal after cutting the rectangular slot, finishing it with files.  Advantage...it's cool to start with, historical, and an easy way to maintain a tight dovetail.  Notice the witness marks on the sight and barrel both front and rear.
And Jerry, it's not coming off the rifle, even for you.  I mounted the sight way down the barrel, and it's crystal clear for me - for now.  I love shooting this little bird-like rifle.

Here's some pictures of the sight on the barrel.  You can see that it is about 1 1/8" long and 5/8" across.
