Soldering sight on browned barrel

Is this recommended, or should the browning be removed down to bare metal before soldering?

It should have been soldered on before the barrel was browned.  So Yes, it has to be bright shiny metal to solder to.

Probably should not tell this but the last Fowler I built I used one of those silver heart shaped front sights. I did not get the sight until after I had browned the barrel. Was in a hurry (as I often am :D) and stuck in on with super glue. Now 3 years later its still there! I am not saying you will have that kind of luck but you might try it. If I had to buy the glue I probably would try something stronger than Super Glue.

That's what I figured,... took this NW Trade Gun in on trade and just got done cutting the barrel back back to 30" so I can hold it without pain in my torn rotator cuff.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

tin the sight and prepare a neat landing for it, exercise restraint and care and you can get away with it.
