simple shooting bench plans???
« on: March 06, 2018, 01:02:39 AM »
Anyone have, or know of, any plans or drawings, dimensions etc for a simple shooting bench?
Tired of lugging everything to the truck and driving to a range when I have enough property here to shoot a muzzle loader or even more.
Thanks

I used a set of rugged buddy( bought on line) folding saw horse legs. attached to a cross frame of 2x4's and screwed to a plywood top. make the top as big as you're willing to lug around.

This is about as simple as it gets. An old broken set of folding plastic sawhorses,  screws and 1X4 to steady up the broken parts, a solid top of plywood and 2X4's  and a few sandbags. The heaviest thing is the top, maybe overbuilt but it doesn't move. Real portable or I can leave it at my range. I also made a loading top that locks on the tailgate by means of a piece of wood attached by screws that drops into the gap between the gate and truck bed. 3 V's are cut into it to hold rifles.

This was ultra simple to build, disassembles in about one minute, astonishingly steady/solid.  Originally I built it for both muzzleloaders AND suppositories.  With that in mind, I also built a "brass catcher" that snaps on or off in under 10 seconds.  So far I haven't bothered trying to catch brass from my flintlock pistol.

One of the best ranges that I've been to uses picnic benches https://www.popularmechanics.com/home/how-to-plans/how-to/a6609/build-the-perfect-picnic-table/ but modified the plans instead of bench seats, the table is perpendicular to the shooting line, and the front cross-piece that usually is part of the support for the benches stops at the sides of the front legs, and the rear support is doubled and small platforms for seats are installed.  Nice and heavy, and gives a good platform.
