Good pictures of sideplate engraving?
« on: March 03, 2018, 03:05:29 AM »
Do you folks know of anywhere online you can look at decent pictures of sideplates? It seems like all the books never zoom in close enough to see the details of the engraving. Looking at Lancaster style sideplates mostly.

You'll have to wade thru a few entries to find what you seek, but it's an enjoyable task.

As for side plate pictures in books, check David Hansen's book http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=27234.0

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Schippers book is great and well illustrated in terms of graver sharpening and engraving technique. His engravings are beautiful, but are a bit too sophisticated and over-the-top for typical historic early American gun engraving, IMHO.
