I have a Tennessee rifle that I would like to see if anyone recognizes, it is unsigned but has very distinct features. I am having difficult posting pics if someone could help that would be great. I think the pictures will say it all. I plan to bring it to the Knoxville Show in April. I will keep trying to figure out how to post pics.

To add pictures now, Click REPLY at lower right. A window comes up. Click AD IMAGE To POST at lower left. Follow the instructions. Simple!

I posted a Tennessee rifle a few months ago with a similar patch box. You may want to look at my pictures. The barrel was signed GW which I think was for George Wilhelm.

Thanks Iloco, got the picture option back now, thanks CCF for posting the pics for me along with the call, and thanks BenP. Your rifle is similar for sure but the tang, lock, cheek piece all look like a different maker. This one was probably shortened and the front end reworked if we want to call it worked... not very well I am afraid. I found it odd that the butt plate and patch box are both nailed or pinned on. There are screws holding the trigger guard and plate.

It seems to have a lot of Bean traits but I guess the Bean’s were copied often by others in that region of Tennessee. It certainly has some unique features, hope to learn more about it. Thanks for all th input so far.

... Thanx for x-tra pix ..!! ... just noticed something in the 4th new pic,... is that a hole under the butt between the rear extension of TG and the toe-plate,...

..... if so, is a "feather hole" which is considered a Flintlock feature .... still investigating some of the features to try to draw similarities to known makers .... !!! ... Regards, ... C C Fiddler

Looks very Bean to me as well. Good honest rifle.

I suppose the 'feather hole" could have held a wire 'pricker' for the nipple.

Great rifle so not trying to disparage it, only learn. The lock doesn't look like it fits the mortise very well, particularly at the front and back. Could it be an old replacement or is that just wear?

Robert, I think you are correct and no offense is taken, we find what we find and only hope to learn as much as we can from we are left with. The rifle looks unmolested from the breach plug back. I along with others more knowledgeable than I believe the lock is replaced, barrel shortened, wood may have been shortened , and it may have been converted from flint? The lock mortise has an angled cut at the rear bottom corner that makes me think the Goulcher marked lock was a period ( not sure what period) replacement.

... still intrigued with this gun,... found this entry pipe on the Contemporary Makers blog ... on a rifle that Earl Lanning has researched as having belonged to George Patton,... has to be a feature associated with certain maker,

... maker of Patton's rifle not ID'ed ... Jim's rifle has same entry pipe (see in pix) ....

July 17, 2012 ... go to that page and type in "George Patton" in search box in upper left corner .... about a dozen photos are posted along with a description ...
