Anyone used Jack Brooks casting set?
« on: March 21, 2018, 07:29:10 AM »
Evening all,

Just wondering if anyone has used Jack Brooks bronze -plate lock ?  I think it comes as a casting set does it not?

Have two old barrels to make up into sporting guns, One is marked for Thomas Bannister, (App to Robert Silk 1668, then Rob't Brooke.  Free of Gunmakers Co 1676, Hudson Bay 1685 -1701  etc etc.)
It's old and it's long, just under 54"  and I'd need a suitable lock.  About 14 bore I think.    How do you gents think Jack's lock would work?.....Any other suggestions for a lock?

Also another barrel  I am unsure of.  V faint London proofs, and apparently TP in a heart and I do not see that in Blackmore.  It is only about 44" but has a tanged plug. not set up for a break-off, so it too would need a pretty early lock.
TP May be Thomas Peele.      If Thomas Peele, 1721 -30 Whitehaven.   (Could I get away with a Jim C R-faced English on this one?)
Suggestions on locks most appreciated, or how you found Jack's lock to put together and function.

Thank you for looking ,

Richard.
Lock in question;

BTW, the "TP" 44" barrel is thick at the breech, (1- 1 /2" deep, & 1 7/16" across where the round is flattened for the lock.  Also made Spanish fashion in 4 or 5 sections.

I'm curious too. Been looking at that huge Dutch lock he sells for a project of my own.

Hi Richard,
The Rifle Shoppe and Blackleys certainly have late 1680-1690s English lock sets that would be appropriate.  I've never used Brooks' set but I would prefer a steel plate rather than bronze.  Jim Kibler's Dolep lock might work if you keep the fowler dimensions fairly small.  Chambers round-faced lock would be the only commercially made lock that would be appropriate. You might even consider Chris Evard's Chambers lock with the pan bridle removed.  I wish Barbie Chambers would make 2 pans for their gunmakers lock, the standard Siler and a rounded English version.  That would enable a lot of flexibility and you could create a nice early English lock with Siler internals.

Thanks for your replies, Greg & Dave.

Again, I must have lived a sheltered life.  Never heard of the Dolkep lock, and was also unaware of Brooks  big Dutch lock!

More looking to do!

Dave, a Siler wouldn't fit with these barrels. They are too thick in the breech and need a bigger lock.  Even the R-Faced E. by Chambers would be a squeak fit, as the mainspring would be touching on the barrel to line up the touchhole.

Thank you for the suggestions, I'll check TRS and also Brooks other locks etc.

Best regards
Richard.
