Smoothrifle barrel?
« on: March 24, 2018, 10:26:55 PM »
When choosing a smooth bore barrel that you intend to use with a smooth rifle is there anything specific to take into consideration?  Any barrel recommendations?

Colerain makes, or at least used to make, their regular swamped octagon rifle barrels in a smoothbore version (that not everyone carries).  I used to get them from Tip Curtis.

I would suggest a long 46" to 54" .54 (28bore)  for a smooth rifle, putting the rear sight just before the wedding band and with a turtle blade front sight.

If you are going to use the smooth rifle for turkey hunting, check with your wildlife folks to make sure what bore you need to be legal.  Several years back I made myself two rifles that were alike except one was a smooth rifle that I intended to use during turkey season.  I built the rifle before looking into the requirements, and the bore in my smooth barrel did not meet the requirement.  I ended up selling the smooth rifle and planned to build another with the right bore.  I still haven't taken time out of my schedule to build the rifle again specifically for turkey hunting.

I recommend using a Rice barrel. I talked to Jason and asked him to make one of his Virginia profile barrels up as a smoothie in .62/20 bore. It is 42", full octagonal and swamped. I also had Danny Caywood put a jug choke in the barrel as I want to use it for turkeys too (Jason can install jug chokes his barrels now too). If you ever consider jug choking, you need to make sure that there is at least 0.100" barrel wall thickness around the choked area.  The Rice Virginia barrel has plenty of meat for that.

Tip has a fine selection of barrels no longer made.  You have to get him by phone, and mail a check, the old and proven way.   :-)   Nice fellow.  Best wishes and God Bless,   Marc

I have an original smooth rifle, by Charles Seibert, that has a 40" octagon to round barrel in .54 / 28 ga with original sights front and rear.

Most of the original smooth rifles seemed to have 44-46" long octagon to round barrels.  They usually run from 50-58cal.  Lehigh Valley and Bucks and Berks, and Lebanon Co. guns seem to follow this pattern.  I had Ed. Rayl copy the contours of a very nice whale tail  J.P. Beck smooth rifle, and he did a fine job.

Interesting problem, Roger. Here, any smoothbore + any rimfire for Turkeys.
I figure a .36 round ball flock lock rifle is a rim-fire. Pretty sure I could defend that in court as well.

Larry Zorne (Mold and Gunshop) usually has a number of oct to round in stock. I've used a number of his 28ga (54 cal) and his 20ga (62 cal). for smooth rifles.
He is usually set up at Ft Fredrick if your heading that way.

You’ll need a tall front sight on an octagon to round barrel, using round ball
