Need to find a company to pour a Silver Side Plate mold
« on: March 29, 2018, 08:12:17 PM »
I have the opportunity to get a couple side plates (very intricate fowling) molds (wax) and I am looking for a company to send them to supply and pour silver (German or other) for me. Anyone have a great company that you have worked with that will take this on?

Too much work and talent needed for me to even try - 8) - and I would like quality as there is little quantity.

Thanks all,

Jon

Check with your local high school art or industrial tech teachers.

A quick search found this place; http://www.indianametalcraft.com/index.html
They might be able to point you to someone close.

Check with a local jeweler. From experience, some have the ability to cast as large as a sideplate.

A one sided casting like that can be cast at home using cuttlebone as a mold. You just cut the desired pattern into the soft side of the cuttlebone, and pour your molten silver into it. This will work for Sterling silver, but not for German silver.

Hi Jon,
There is also Ball and Ball in Exeter, PA.  They cast several patch boxes for Ken Gahagan.  They are well known for top flight work.

It shouldn't be hard to find someone to do the casting but definitely do not go to your local jeweler even if they do that kind of work.  They're liable to be far more costly than someone who specializes in that work.  I would also recommend C.A. Brown Casting in Cranston, Rhode Island.  Their customer service is top-notch, and they do great work.  I used Cranston Casting for 30 years until the owner retired and sold out but Brown is a worthy substitute to say the least.  That region is pretty interesting - for whatever reasons it's one of the major casting/jewelry centers in the U.S.

All, I had a wonderful conversation with the owner of Brown Casting (www.browncasting.com) He has done Flintlock work before, very nice guy and has some sharp examples of work - I will give him a shot (he is about 45 minutes away) so I can actually see him and his work - I will keep you up to date on the project (as it is a follow along to two of my new builds) It's always good to have resources and references that we can share here -

Thanks all again for all  the feedback - I like this place - May stay a while :)

Hello Jon,

It is good to hear you found somebody for what you need.
May be he can help you.
I saw on YouTube silver clay, only you need an oven.
But that may be more expensive than the parts you need.
You know, that when you are in The Netherlands you are always welcome, just let me know.
