My friend Del who owns our local bison ranch, just finished his first ever muzzle loading rifle, with my help and in my shop.  We worked every Wednesday evening including yesterday, and he took it home last night.  He ordered Jim's absolutely dead plain maple for a .40 cal rifle and this is what we got.  When we started, he said he'd like to finish it blonde...this was the compromise.  This is just straight Ferric Nitrate finished with Circa 1850 Tung Oil.  All hardware browned with LMF screws and triggers polished and blued.

LMF = Laurel Mountain Forge, a brand name offering stains and finishes, including browning solution. In my experience the browning solution is the easiest to work with and gives a very nice brown.

Those rifles are excellent and this one was done very well.  The stock wood is fine, IMO, and that finish is perfecto.
