A Master Passes On

I apologize if this is in the wrong section.
Master gunsmith Jack Gee passed on yesterday due to complications following a heart attack. He was in his early 70s.
Jack was the originator of the Michigan LongrifleSmiths Guild (1988 to present)of which I was a charter member. He introduce a good number of members to Dixon's Fair and we all entered our guns and won numerous awards. Something he was very proud of, I am sure. He also served as a rifle judge at Dixon's Fair for a number of years, maybe some of you have met him there. My building skills improved by leaps and bounds under Jack's disciplined tutelage and so did many other local builders. He will surely be missed in the community.

 I was a member of the guild also  and learned alot from Jack . He let you try to figure out your problems first before stepping in to guide you down the right path in building .Had many a good session with him and the other students. Jack studied under a master by the name of Art Holley .There will be a big void to fill with his passing .Maybe my astute friend Tom Caster can fill it someday.  Eric D. Lau Riverdale Mi.

Tom...sorry to hear that.  I met him at Dixon's a long time ago, and sold him many barrels over the years.    I'm sure he
was instrumental in getting a lot of guys into gunbuilding, another one of the good guys gone....scary................Don

Tom, I'm very sorry to hear of Jack's passing. I also regret that I never got in touch with him regarding his background and history with Art Holly. Only goes to show you that those things we put on the back burner for later, should be handled all the sooner. I have read your comments in the past mentioning Mr. Gee and know what it is like to lose such a good friend and teacher. Just remember, Jack is at this very moment playing cards with J.P. Beck and Nick Beyer! My prayers go out to Jacks family.

My sincere condolences Tom.  I didn’t know the gentleman, but those of us who have lost good friends we loved and respected know how you feel.  It always hurts to lose a friend.  Our prayers will go out to his family.

Thanks guys. I guess he was older than I thought according to his obit...77, and 46 of it as a tool & die maker in Lansing & GM in Flint. Quite a craftsman and excellent shooter in his  day!

CaptJoel, no, he's more likely hanging around with the Bedford Co. boys, that was his favorite school. Jack's cousin Forgus also trained under Art Holly at the same time, and would be happy to talk about Art, and anything else for that matter, with you. I can get you in touch if you would like.

It is a shame when we lose a member of this fraternity. My thoughts are with the folks who knew him well. Remember the skills he passed on to you, they and other memories will be his legacy. Mentors are best respected by passing their knowledge on to others.  BJH

 We said goodby to Jack this afternoon with several members of the Michigan Longriflemakers Guild and the Lansing Muzzleloading Gun Club. We preformed a salute to him firing our smoothbore's while dressed in our finest atire. Post 143 of the American Legion also honored him.   Eric D. Lau  Riverdale Mi.
