In the 1980's/90‘s (don't know exact date range) the Chambers Early Lancaster had a Getz barrel.  I don't recall if there were other choices, but don't think so. Perhaps Jim will chime in. The Getz stamp, complete with serial number,  should be on a lower barrel flat at the breech end. The Getz bbl on my .50 cal. E. L. is coned and the lands peter out right at the muzzle, so i suspect the coning on yours might be after-market.  Also, if your lands end short of the muzzle, the bore between the end of the lands and the muzzle must be over groove diameter - not a good situation, in my opinion.  My gun is still on the bench (long story there) and I sure hope my experience on the range is more positive.  It should be finished within the week.  As others have recommended, check the bbl. lugs and pins.  I am a firm believer in slotting the lugs so the stock can move independent of the bbl.

Ha! I didn't notice how old this thread was  ::)

Could a guy send the offending barrel to another barrel maker and have them duplicate it's profile?

A good barrel maker can duplicate the barrel. I had Jason at Rice duplicate one for me but think the other major makers could do the same.

Another option perhaps less costly would be to get Bobby Hoyt to ream it out and rifle it perhaps to a .52 cal. Bobby could evaluate that possibility and if not feasible or not something you want to do make a duplicate barrel.

Doc Coles: Sir, I have coned (4) four of my rifles and have had no point of impact changes. They shoot well. When I cone a rifle or pistol, I leave a very shallow trace of rifling at the muzzle.  The problem may be at the smooth muzzle rifling. Have a great week end. AJ.

how about a liner for the barrel? no need to change anything but the bore. Very common with the black powder ctg. crowd. I have a T/C Patriot with a liner and it shoots great. Hoyt or Rice or FCI should be able to do it.

Are you using a tight patch/ball combination?

.005 under size?  or .010?

I am trying to figure out it my problem with groups is due to poor shooting or a bad load combination.

Martin  Will try this again. Ball .005 to .010 under bore size .005 preferred, a powder charge of one grain per cal. to one and a half grains per cal.Patching of .016 to .022  will hopefully get you patches that you could reuse.  When you get patches that you could reuse then work on your skill level

I was using a .530 ball, 100 grains 2F, and a pillow ticking patch, .018.  Same load in both guns.

In one rifle, the patches are reusable, and the groups were good.  That barrel is not coned.

In another, the patches were torn, and the groups were bad.  That barrel is coned.

First rifle was a percussion, second was flintlock, so might be part flinching.

In the coned flintlock, I will try .535 and same patch, and see if the patches are reusable, then work on grouping.

Thanks for the advice.

I believe you have identified at least part of the problem.

Yes, I am trying to figure out why the patches were torn, if the only difference is the coned barrel.  The patches could have been reused in my other rifle, same load, no coning.

Apparently, the coned barrel needs a tighter patch/ball combination.  At least that what I think from doing a search and reading numerous threads.

I am going to get some .535 balls and try it that way and see what happens.

If you are blowing patches, I would wonder if the barrel has been shot in yet. Some shoot good right out of the box, some take a couple hundred rounds to settle in.
I had a Judge Resley barrel I ran 500 rounds through, and it was still blowing patches. He was the guy who taught Bill Large how to build barrels. I lapped the bore, problem went away.

Same caliber, same rifling, I think they are by the same manufacturer, but I am not sure.

Patches are blown in the coned barrel, not in the first.

Groups are good in the first, but it is percussion, and the second is flintlock.  I have less experience at flintlock.

Percussion: not coned, good groups, reusable patches.
Flintlock: coned, poor groups (could be me), but also blown patches

I think your observation that I should find a load that does not blow patches and then work on accuracy is a great suggestion which I will try.

Doc,
First, it's an old barrel some of which are suspect from a safety standpoint and second you are spending good money on an iffy piece; weak, bent etc. Why not just send it to Ed Rayle or Bob Hoyt and let them duplicate it for you. You'll end up with, if the rest of the rifle is in good shape, a first class restored old rifle safe and accurate to shoot.
