Couple things fo do yet, brwon barrel, then boil want blue/black finish.Buff out wood finish, few more coats of oil.Welcome any critiques, always need advice for the next one. Some thoughts, should have a butt with more heel, some engraving on lock when color cased.Wood with color case may be a bit too fancy for a hawken fullstock,IMHO but I like it.

Like to thank everybody who chimed in on any help me threads.Herb,D.Pharris,Mt.Meek,R.Sells,Captchee,you knowledge and help on these forums regarding hawken rifles was a big help.I would like to say a special thank you to D.Taylor Sapergia, your guidance, wisdom, patience really helped me out.You always made time to answer my many questions via email,PM,threads, your an inspiration to us all.Being this is my first build, first hawken,my goal was to try and capture some of the nuances of a fullstock hawken, get the inlets tight as possible and hopefully hit the broad side of a barn with it,LOL.

.58 cal green mt. barrel,L&R lock, triggers, iron hardware came from various places, thanks R.Sells for a proper nose piece. It is a precarve from pecatonica, you will need to remove plenty to get here.I had them inlet the lock plate as at the time I was a little scared about placement.I did the rest,I cut the butt to 13 1/2 LOP.looking back I would have did the lock inlet myself as well.A lot of precarve problems seem to get reported,no problems here other than the ones I created. Some nice wood, good curl, the pics dont do it justice. If you look down the stock, curl from the top down stands out while curl coming from the bottom dissapears, look from the othere end the curl from the bottom stands out and the top dissapears, quite striking.Folks at wyoming armory did the color case, great turn around time, reasonable rates.Stock finish is tannic acid, aqua fortis(Jim Kiblers) and Chambers oil finish.Stock needs some buffing out.

I like it. The barber pole effect around the RR is nice.

Beautiful rifle, Joe - but, well, you know what's wrong with it.
On the plus side, it is really nice - just got that lock stuck on the wrong side.
WOW- that blue running down the middle of the guard. WOW!
THAT'S COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!
Taylor, going to have to show these pictures to big Ron.

Beautiful rifle, Joe - well done. Now - sear some green off'n it. Good calibre choice, good length of pull.  Like it much.
Now - 82-85gr. 2f for plinking, nice .575" ball and 12 ounce denim and it will shoot 1-hole groups at 50 yards. A .570 mould might
also work, but I always start .005" under if possible - with that .020" to .022" denim patch - that combo has never let us down.

Joe,
Your rifle has come out great, now take her out and shoot her a bunch to build natural character to the rifle.  Good work.

Right nice Hawken ,Joe. I also like the coloring on the metal, the stock finish is very pleasing,as well. Don't take any guff 'bout the leftylock!!
The first custom flint rifle I was able to have built has a l/h large siler flint. I shoot right handed, the gun helped cure my flinch, cause I never see the flash ,my left eye is closed.
Very nice job. Best regards, Dave  8) 8)

I am no specialist in the nuances of Hawken  architecture , but it looks to me that you did a very nice job!!! The wood and metal fit and finish are very attractive!  Looks like the only thing it "needs "  , is a bunch of shooting!!!!    Keep us posted, I`m sure she will perform as well as she looks!   Nice Job!!!    Nate

Looks good to me sir! Did you leave the barrel alone? The pictures make it look like polished steel. If so I think that looks pretty cool.

Wow, first build! Very good looking rifle, and it gives me hope and encouragement that I can do something to be proud of on my first build :)

R,

Nope.  There were 2 different threads on this rifle, one with pics, one without.  I merged the 2 threads into one.

Oh, by the way, Joe, that's a really handsome rifle there.  Nicely done.

[ ][/ [/ [/ [/ [/ ] .tinypic.com/2wcgq6v.jpg[/img][/ [/ [IMG]http://i67.tinypic.com/15ri4ya.jpgCouple more pictures, real funny piece of wood, looking at these angles you can see some curl and to look at it from a different one you would see it coming from below. That toe plate is two and a half times thickerand a good inch longer than one supplied by most places. After putting it all together I needed just a tad more weight to help balance things out, left a bit more meat on the butt as well. You can see it from a side view.Instead of rounding the edge into the stock I left it a little thicker ,making it appear to be as thick as the toe, looked a little more balanced to my eye as well as adding weight.Rifle shoulders real good and should make for a great hunting rifle. As far as leaving the barrel polished,I'm probable going to brown it,then boil it in water to get a dark blue, black.Thinking this will match the look better and be more HC.Thanks for looking and appreciate the feedback, thank you

Very impressive first rifle Joe!  I'm going to have to really nit-pick to find something to criticize.  I like the colour and finish of the wood;  I like the colour case job by Wyoming Arms;  I like the architecture and overall look of the rifle.  Really nice work.

Barrel keys:  as received the heads need to be reduced in size, immho.  That big football just gives you a lot to work with.  Concave molding around the lock, especially at the aft end, should be a little more subtle rather than deeply defined.  Use a 1/2" rat-tailled file rather than a 3/8" - it'll make the panels blend more subtly into the surrounding ground.

Told ya...had to really dig to make comments.  Congrats:  now some targets please.
