Locks for SMR
« on: May 21, 2018, 11:28:47 PM »
I'm getting ready to order and wanted to be sure that I didn't do something stupid.  What's everyone got?  I was leaning towards the Chamber's Classic Ketland or the Davis Late Ketland.  Any other options?

That depends on whether you are going to shoot it and what maker you are reproducing, and when.  If you are going to shoot it, then I go with a Chambers Late Ketland.   If it is more of a display model, then one of the L&R late English locks might be a better match to the original.    If it is a left hand,  you don't have a choice but to go with L&R.

Im a lefty and used the l&r bailes quite successfully.  Did a little file work on the hammer and frizzen to bring down to plainer looking lock.  Very fast lock andsparks great. Also have a left hand Cochran on a gun I'm building now.

1820'ish.  I'm not making a copy of a specific rifle, I'm right-handed and I do intend to shoot it and will likely hunt with it.

The Chambers Late Ketland IMHO is the best of the  production locks.
Good looking and fairly priced. I have used the externals of these and
made bench crafted linked mechanisms for them but am not taking orders any more
for them.
