Making powder measures from brass tubes
« on: July 24, 2018, 07:14:57 AM »
I have used cartridge cases, but find it easier to make up exactly what I need from brass tubing.  For a .32, I use 5/16 inch tubing.  These are for a larger bore.

Dave,.... those measures are pretty sweet, do you make the end-plugs from scratch?

For years I made brass powder measures, but nothing as fancy as these. I always made the top of the measure larger than the bore of the intended caliber. So, one could tip the full measure into the barrel, and simply drop it, jarring any powder that was in the tube out. The loop on the top of mine was made from a big brass cotter key. I originally started making them for shotguns, and trade muskets, because I had come into a substantial amount of brass tubing in the proper size. But, got into other sizes as shooters requested them.
 Very nice work.

Rollingb,

I turn the end closure on these measures from brass bar stock.  I ground a form tool (actually several) with various designs for different items I make.  I use this design for powder measures and horn swivels.

Here are some with brass and horn......

One of the members of the board asked me to make a larger than usual adjustable powder measure.  It took me longer than is should have because of a business trip.  It has two different barrels and is made to charge a small cannon.  The short barrel throws 220 grains to 420 grains of cannon powder.  The larger barrel throws 370 to 580 grains.

Those powder measuring tools, like DaveC2's Gunner's Mate, are very special!
