Bag Axe/Polled Tomahawk
« on: April 28, 2018, 12:41:34 AM »
Just fooling around in the shop. Hand forged mini-polled tomahawk, and a small bag axe. Curly Ash haft for the hawk and Osage Orange for the axe.

That is some pretty good fooling around. I like both of them, but the one on the left really grabs me.

Those both look great!  I’ve used Osage for handles (and bows) before...that stuff is harder than woodpecker lips.  Are they made from tool steel, or did you forge weld a cutting edge in?

both look great.  What size billet did you start with for each?
Missed you at the class this year.

Nice. What are the dimensions?

I have little round-poll tomahawk with a 4 oz head I made while taking a blacksmithing class many years ago. It is pretty cute, but just to light to be very useful for anything.

In response to the size and dimensions of the hawk and axe.
I used 1/2" square stock, cut to 3 3/4" to form the hawk head , and for the axe I used 1/2" x 1" stock, cut to 3". The hawk head is 4 1/2" in length, and the cutting egde is 1". The axe head is 3 5/8" long and the cutting edge is 1 5/8".

I like the head of the one on the right and the handle of the left one.  Maybe, the other way around.  I think that both of them look great.
