FATHER DAUGHTETR RIFLES
« on: April 28, 2009, 02:44:13 AM »
I call this project the father daughter project,.  I built two rifles that are basically the same, one for myself, and one for a young lady that is always helping everyone else, she runs our shooting matches, and she teaches  flintlock rifle shooting with me at the Outdoor Women's Program for the State of N.H.  She has been especially nice to my grandchildren.   This rifle is a present to her from me, even though she is not my daughter I would be proud if she was.

These rifles are 40 cal. 38 inch A wt. swamped barrels in the Lancaster style.  The only difference is in the decoration.  These rifles will be on display at Dixon's this year.

Larry Pletcher said that he would like to see them when they were finished.

I am sorry but I cannot seem to get the pictures to post.  I am out of time for tonight so I will try again tomorrow night.  Besides I am just about to put my foot through this computer.  It seems that every time I post pictures something changes.

Snipped from David's post: Larry Pletcher said that he would like to see them when they were finished.

Wow! David, your stuff is awsome!  I'm amazed everytime I see your work.

I'm looking forward to seeing you at Friendship.  Will either of these rifles be with you?  I hope we can sit down and have another try at the interview.  I learn from my mistakes and think I know what I did wrong.

Best regards,
Larry

Gorgeous work as always Dave.

I particularly like the color of the finish. If I may ask, how did you achieve this color ?

All the best

Out of curiosity, the decoration on the muzzle...is that your own design or did you pick it up elsewhere? Regardless, it is the most interesting and striking muzzle decoration I have seen. I will begin using on my current build...and on all after that. I will be pleased to mention you as the one who introduced it to me.

Those are two beautiful rifles. I am sure you are excited to present one as a gift. One of the most pleasing experiences associated with building is that moment when a gun's recipient holds it in their hand and slowly absorbs the notion that it is theirs. It is a pure pleasure to witness.

tallbear,
Thank you so much for getting my pictures posted for me.  I was very surprised to see them there when I finally got back to the computer tonight.  I can't imagine how you did it but I am glad that you did.  I was a little frustrated last night, but tonight I did realize what mistake I was making

Larry,
Yes I will have both rifles with me at friendship, in fact the young lady and her husband will be coming with me this year.  By the way she is the N.H. state woman's flintlock champion so I know that the rifle will be shot plenty, and taken good care of.  Looking forward to seeing you there.

ptk1126,
The color of the stain on both rifles was mixed with an alcohol stain that I mixed myself.  Very complicated.....Denatured alcohol, powdered walnut color, and just a touch of lamp black water soluable color.  I keep applying the stain, usually several coats, until it won't absorb into the wood any more.  I have had several e mails asking the same question  Very easy, the way I like it.

NS Brown,
I have used this same design  on the muzzle end many times over the last fifty years.  Honestly I can't remember if I saw it on an antique or not.  I don't know if you noticed it or not but I did cone the inside of the barrel, and it shoots five shots into the same hole at 25 yds.

Three  other things that I didn't mention about those rifles.  The cheek piece on both rifles has  a piece of black cow horn on top.  It is dove tailed in from the back end so that it can't be knocked off.  One cheek piece has a silver moon inlay, and the other has an Ivory moon.   My rifle has a lock that I built myself using damascus steel.

All the work is awesome, but that Damascus lock is incredible, thank you for the inspiration.

David...

Thanks very much for the pictures!  I really can't add to what's been said already, the rifles are an absolute work of art and exhibit the quality and craftsmanship all your work displays.  I can't wait to see them at Dixons!  Thanks again for the pictures, and the inspiration...

You are all correct... I am a VERY lucky lady... lucky in the fact that I can call Dave,  Esther and their family my FAMILY!!!

All fine works of art have either a title or a name, this absolutely beautiful piece of art is named Goldi.

Goldi, my husband & I will see you all in Friendship!

The concept of the rifles creation is remarkable enough without the fact that they are exemplary.  good on ya' David.  I look forward to seeing these two lovlies at Dixon's.  You do us all proud with your talent and generosity.

David, they are magnificent! That seems an insufficient term for these rifles but I can think of none better. Thanks for sharing them.

Is working  damascus harder than using steel or iron when making a lock and does it have to be hardened after it is finished?
