Zischang Barrel Browning Solution at "Track"
« on: June 27, 2018, 06:25:54 PM »
Thought you guys would like to know this.

Track's "Tried and True" Barrel Brown: This formula was documented by Zischang, the famous early gunsmith (19th Century, iirc). Commonly used by early gunsmiths, it is reproduced by Track.. It is the best cold rust method of producing a very rich dark brown color on iron or steel.

No heat is used, no mercury compounds. Safe for soldered ribs and shotgun barrels. Use degreaser before application. The brown finish is composed of hydrated iron oxides. Your results can be controlled and enhanced by using a simple humidity box or closet to control the amount of moisture in the atmosphere. Full details for achieving success in 24 hours are included in our instruction sheet. Several applications, mostly unattended, over several days, is the most popular technique.

We will include our instruction sheet, free when you order Track-Brown.

Getting it down in 24 hours seems a bit optimistic. I recently finished using this stuff to brown a gun. Even with high humidity it took about a week. I kept it going for a few days after what I would say is done and it just kept getting better. Final results are astounding. I browned a barrel with it in the winter when humidity was very low. It took over a month to finish. That turned out excellent also. Don't bother with that fast stuff.

With a damp box, 24 hours will brown a barrel.  One application every three hours.  Usually 6 applications, carding between, will yield a lovely deep durable brown.

Anyone tried it for a rust blue?

I used it to get an antique brown. I would card and reapply a new coat about once a day. In three days I had a very brown barrel, almost too much. It took about the same amount of time with carding and washing to stop the after rust. Ended up with a very rough and tough finish. Exactly what I was looking for on this build.

Just like LMF browning....... apply and card every 3 hours gives a smooth, even, purple brown finish.
If you like a textured, kind of leather grained brown, apply and card every 12 hours.
Both very nice, durable finish.
A sweat box to control humidity, will make everything repeatable.

I have been experimenting/practicing rust bluing on mild steel in anticipation of my Kibler Colonial rifle that is due to arrive in a couple months. I used a homemade ferric chloride solution and also LMF and a humidity chamber. With the LMF I was carding and reapplying every 90 minutes to two hours and completely done in an easy day. My homemade juice worked well but took about 3X as long.

Zischang's rust brown/rust blue formula was nothing more than Hydrochloric acid &  Nitric acid together with enough iron bits thrown in to disolve till it wouldn't take any more.
The 'iron' was generally said to be swarf and filings from bbl making process and other bench work. Iron nails of the period are often said to be used as well.

3oz of hydrochloric & 4 oz of Nitric acid,,,the amt of iron ends up being around nearly a 1/2 lb by the time the smoke clears. Do this outside. Add the iron in small increments so it can be consumed w/o a violent reaction. It does produce a lot of heat and acrid smoke.

When it cools down,, add the mix to a qt of distilled water and just let it sit for a few days.
Then strain it thru a cloth to get any bits out of it. and put it up in a clean glass jar. It keeps forever but will eat thru a steel cap eventually.

Yes it's A/R eccentially.

The Neidner Rifle Co used the same stuff to rust blue their custom work in the 20's and 30's. I think they tweeked the formula a bit by adding some 'Sweet Spirits of Nitre',,which is Etheyl Nitrite. Not sold anymore unless you have a license to obtain it of some sort..
I don't know what the added stuff was supposed to do, but you find it as a componet in many early rust brown and rust blue formulas.

The Zischang formula does make for a nice deep blue color when rust bluing.
But as it is Ferric Nitrate, it's the same main ingredient as L/Mtn.
I think a lot of the final look has to do with the polish of the metal, the metal composition itself, the techniques of the person doing the work, cycles applied, what is used to card with, ect.

since it's acid with iron dissolved, could you just use aqua fortis stock stain to brown the barrel and other iron parts?

Carl walker, head gunsmith of the old Green River Rifle Works, told me about this stuff about a year ago.  He browned a barrel in his cold basement without heat or added humidity and it took only two days, if I remember.  He really liked it.  He has the formula for the original GRRW browning agent (I still have a bottle), but he says it has some nasty stuff in it.

Most or all of the acid is exhausted in what we call iron-saturated AQF stock stain and lacks the ability to eat more iron.  Pure ferric nitrate crystals should have zero added ability to rust iron, over and above water.

PLEASE - from an old biologist and chemist - ALWAYS add the acid to the water, not the other way around!

Adding water to an acid (or strong base) can cause a really violent reaction.

Rubber gloves and a face shield really come in handy, as does doing your mixing outside.

learned it this way..

acid to water, just like aught to!
Water to acid, prepare to be blasted!!! :o

of course, hogging a BUNCH of acid into a fixed volume of water can cause some serious boil over and injuries!!! ( seen that one in the lab, with an impatient type and sulfuric acid )

Please be SAFE ...

One of the guys in my club has a Tulle built for him by Homer Dangler quite a few years ago.  The browned barrel is a very nice chocolate brown and has held up very well after years of use.  I bought a bottle of Homer Dangler's browning solution from MBS a while back and I'm going to try it on a current build.  One thing I noticed in the instructions is that you do not card between coats.  I'm curious to see how that works out and will be ready to card if it starts building too much scale.

If anybody here has any experience with using Homer Dangler's browning solution I'd appreciate hearing how it worked for you.  Thanks.

Re; Rusting barrels and parts with aquafortis...

I can't speak to home brewed aquafortis stock stain..(nitric acid with iron dissolved). I guess it would depend on the strength of the acid used and how much it was depleted by the iron.

But:
Pure ferric nitrate crystals dissolved in water will stain your stock and rust your parts with no problem. That is all I use. It is acidic enough to rot your clothes as well ::)
