Old Powder Horn with Powder
« on: June 28, 2018, 04:47:41 PM »
A friends 95 tear old uncle passed away recently.  My friend received a bunch of gun related stuff.  He knows I am into black powder so he gave me this powder horn as he did not want it.  It belonged to his uncles grandfather.  I am sure it isn't worth anything however the reason I am posting this is that the powder in it is a bit strange to me due to its size.  The picture is with FFG next to the larger granulation that was in the horn.  I have never seen cannon or FG powder so I am not sure if this is one of them or something else.  I like it and intend to keep it just curious about the powder,  Any input??

Wow, that is some chunky gunpowder. As far as the horn goes, I think it's pretty neat.

I like the horn, a good honest working horn. I do not think that homemade powder would be shiny like that, it appears to be factory processed.

I did a search on different powder grades and I think you're right.  The pictures shown online have the same size, shape and graphite shiny appearance.  Wonder why it was in a horn?   Cheap supply of powder?

Very neat old horn.  I really like the color and the stopper in the base.  It would be a nice companion to a common-man Appalachian rifle.  God Bless,  Marc

What part of the country was it found in? Just a thought; coal miners used to have to supply their own powder to blow down the coal after they undercut it and drilled. The process was to lay on your side with a small pick and make a relief cut at the bottom of the seam of coal. Next with a long hand operated auger you drilled holes near the top of the seam. These holes were charged and the fuses lit and you retreated back out the shaft a ways till the smoke cleared and went back in and loaded the coal in the car. Your tag went on the car and you got paid according to how many pounds of coal was in your car.
 Does look like blasting powder.

Just a thought...if the horn has a sea history, it might contain powder for a line-throwing gun. I’d reckon they used a coarse powder.  The horn and contents look to be in great shape!

It looks like heavily graphited blasting powder. Blasting powder can be used in big calibers, but it’s not as hot as rifle powder, so you have to use more of it. It might have been used in a punt gun for waterfowling.
I used some Giant brand 3FA blasting powder ( about the granular size of 1F rifle powder)in my trade gun for a while. It worked great with shot loads, once I figured out how much to use. After I ran out I found out the powder works that produced it blew up about the turn of the twentieth century. Luckily I didn’t throw away the metal keg that has the company name on it.

Ok Dave, I gott'a ask; what is lift powder? Wikipedia says:

" Lift powder is simply granulated black powder (also known as gunpowder)."

 Another definition says:

"Works immediately to temporarily lift, firm, and tone your skin while reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles"

 Pretty sure that's not it.

  Thanks, Tim

Pyrotechnics uses a coarse powder as a lift charge to get it out of the tube and into the air.

Several years ago I busted a Chinese company for smuggling this type of powder into the United States.  They were bringing it in disguised as 12" pyrotechnics shells.  The 12" shells were packed full of black powder.  What tipped me off is there was no lift charge and no fuse.
