There are a few different places you can get one. Mine came from Charlie Burton  , FCI barrels. Others can give more info , I`m sure. Nate

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Ed Rayl will make you just about anything you might want.   I just got a completely custom 47" barrel from him copying an original Alfred Gross barrel.

Ed Rayl has on file the barrel dimensions from a lot of original pieces he has recreated and can duplicate almost anything.

A 48" 40 cal in an A-weight FCI barrel is going to be pretty whippy.  I have one in 38 cal and it is.  I think the Rice A weights are a little thicker outside dimensions so probably a bit stiffer though.  Check your waist dimensions.  You may need to solder on your lugs if there isn't enough metal there for an adequate safety margin for cutting them in.

They are 48" long.  Would they be worth $200 each?

My 40 caliber flintlock rifle made by the late Cotton Volrath has a 48" Getz swamped barrel that I believe is an A weight.  It is not "whippy" in the slightest.  The extra length gives it just enough weight to hold and balance steady shooting in the offhand position.   It is the most "svelte" rifle I have ever carried.

Majorjoel; interesting, FCI can make one i don't the profile though just might be what i'm asking for. they said its a 3 month turnaround. Rice barrel company was one in B profile it might be a little heavy i don't know, more thought mush go into it.

My 48" A weight FCI barrel has the following dimensions;
Breech   0.900"
Waist    0.650"
Muzzle  0.800"

All barrels flex when they are fired.  The more metal that there is around them, the lesser the amplitude of the bending.  Everything else being equal, a longer barrel is going to have greater deflection at the muzzle than a shorter one.  That's neither here nor there though, as what really matters is what direction the ball is going when it exits.  That's why fine tuning a load can take a while to find that which yields best accuracy for that specific gun.
