Patchbox Fit

Hi All,
   I'm thinking my patch box doesn't fit as well as it should. It came with a collection of parts to build an "early Lancaster".  Since this is my first patch box installation I thought I would ask for expert opinion. I'm seeing that the patch box is slightly low on the center line as a result of how I have to line up the side plates to fit the curve of the butt. Do you see what I see or is the fit OK?

Please take any advice I give on this subject with a large grain of salt!

Do you plan on putting a molding on it? If so, you might want to trace it in before deciding where you like the patchbox best.

First I would remake the bottom side plate to make the end text to the butt plate longer.  Both the top side plate and the bottom side plate are the same. This is a design error, the bottom plate design should be offset from the top plate enough to allow some of the end of the top plate that meets the butt plate to have a shoulder. 

Second, if you are going to have lower butt stock molding, cut them in before installing the patch box.

Bama hit the nail on the head. After posting my question I looked at the template that came with the patch box and it appears they packed two upper side plates in the kit. I look forward to making a replacement of the proper length.

Mike, you've made my day successful because you helped me learn something. Doing a search for "Virginia patchbox" on the forums here I found several pictures of patchboxes on Virginia rifles with outlines quite similar to mine. 

Googling "John Brooks" I found that he was active in the early 19th Century.

The manufacturer of my patchbox lists it as "John Brooks - Brass   John Brooks patchbox in basically a Lancaster School design. Single piercing box."
