Engraving Question
« on: August 30, 2018, 09:17:24 PM »
How are these little scoops made? Is there a specific graver to do these? I’ve been practicing engraving and these things are driving me more crazy. This picture isn't the best but it is the best I can find online.  They are a lot more refined and well defined on some rifles.  They are basically egg shaped on top and flat on the bottom.

I made a graver of round drill rod about 5/32” diameter and put a small belly on it. Works great for those. But it’s unsteady for a long deep round line. Who cares? It’s my scooper.

I used it for the deeper lines near the lock nails on my Fainot sideplate. I just kept narrowing the graver till it was right.

It’s a round bottomed graver, rather than a square 90 degree graver.
You can make one on your own, or Steve Lindsay has a template to create and sharpen one.
