This is 3 coats of waterlox, two coats of true oil and 5 coats of true oil with madder root mixed in. Any thoughts? Should I add more coats of madder root? It’s getting darker red each time I run a coat on.

I use the marine sealer on about everything. My wife bought a container of it for something long ago and never used it, so I use it. I also mix 3rds bees wax, boiled linseed oil and turpentine for a top coat on everything. I haves put that on here yet, but I probably will.

Brother, your new rifle looks grand. I wouldn't put any more madder root stuff on it. Let it set up a bit, then a good rub down with your favorite wax.
Quite envious of that, as you have done a splendid job on the whole thing. Now, put all the parts-pieces back on, and give us some good close ups of it.

Yes I did. I believe 3 coats of aquafortis. My heat gun blew on round 2. The aqua fortis turned it a beautiful red color that I liked. After I rubbed the waterlox in, it turned honey brown. I wasn’t going to use the madder lake but I wanted the Lehigh reddish color and not honey brown. It was a lot easier to use than I expected. I mixed it in a marble mortar and pestal bowl. I just went in circles until my arm got tired. I wish I would have taped my silver inlets. It’s pretty tedious scrubbing the varnish off of them. These pictures are right after the aquafortis. They lightened up when I put the waterlox on.

That stuff. FWIW, it has turned both guns I’ve built to honey brown applying it after aquafortis.

I noted from the photograph of the Waterlox can label that the product is "Waterlox Marine -- Marine Sealer, medium sheen -- resists moisture".

Looking VERY good!! I like the reddish color for a Lehigh type rifle. This is just a question , I was wondering if you are planning to engrave the box and inlays? If so , you might want to hold off on any more finish work until you engrave it. I always do my engraving before finish , if it is a part that can`t be removed , and engraved off the rifle. Looks great so far! Nate

Yip, that star is fake GS silver. The wrist thing is a 1943 quarter pounded flat and the lady came with the kit. It’s gs too. Nate, I do plan to engrave everything. I bought the Lindsey sharpening template and I’m practicing on sheet. I’m making an Allentown horn and bag to go with the rifle and I’ll keep practicing engraving until I feel somewhat comfortable. I’m brand new at engraving, so thanks for the advice. Gus, I had to grab my first rifle to measure the location of the sights.

Did you wet sand the waterlox in, or just apply and buff?

I just smear it on all the wood. It soaks it up like a vacuum. I never get much of a finish with it. That’s where the bees wax concoction comes in. The true oil immediately put a finish on this gun.
