I'm a lefty magnet

Seems like half of my clients are left handed. I wish I could find a good left handed lock for making southern rifles. So I could spend less time doing lock work and more work on the rifles. Any how here the latest lefty on my bench. The lock is Chambers gun makers lock and the triggers are a cross of Davis plate and springs with my triggers. The barrel is a Rice "A" weight .40 44" long. Persimmon stock wood and the rest of the parts are made in my shop. The patch box is inspired by a Jacob Gross rifle box.

I find the same thing. The statistics say 11% of the population is Left Handed, yet about 1/3 of all the guns I make are for L.H. customers.
I don't know what that is, but that's how it fall together for me anyway.

Maybe Lefties cannot find proper shooting irons real easy, so they look to maybe getting a beautiful flint lock rifle such as you are displaying.
Were I a Leftie, I would be all over that piece of yours, B.Barker!

Left handers tend to be more artistic. Left handers tend to be more interested in history and can appreciate the history and art of the Kentucky Rifle. Left handers due to their nature are drawn to certain career fields and hobies. Antique cars, Reenacting, music and the social sciences. Mathematics ....not so much. Left handers tend to be more flighty and by the seat of their pants.
At the fire house we were eating lunch....6 of us. The Assistant Chief noticed 5 were left handed. He said ..."Do you know how statistically rare this is?
Maybe not...considering the career field.
A pro builder needs to consider this about left handers. Since lefthanders are a little flighty with short attention spans and they may not can add well. A left hander may default on a build before a right hander. Then the builder is stuck with a left handed gun that's hard to sell.
IMHO a left handed gun build may need more non refundable "parts money" up front or an arrangement for refund when the left handed rifle eventually sells.
I'm lefthanded and but I prefer right handed rifles as left handed guns and rifles look odd to me..

I quit doing lefties completely now, only have one left to do and it's the last ever. Used to agree to a few but turned away lots.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

I have made a few left side locks and ONE left hand caplock rifle but now the labor
and parts that must be bought makes them almost cost prohibitive for most makers
and customers. At this point in time I am taking no new work until I post on this forum
asking for it.

Mountainman, I made the patch box. I seen some photo's of a Jacob Gross rifle that the Risers had and really liked it. This one isn't an exact copy of the original.
I usually try to talk lefties into getting a right handed rifle made. Sometime it work other times it doesn't.

Brian, nice work! I always like to see your mounts, in themselves , works of art! Looks like it should hold nicely as well. I`m sure we all want to see this one finished. Is the PB latch 3M , or the dollar store stuff?
Great work!!! Nate

I prefer left handed when it comes to rifles or smooth bore long guns, how ever I can and do shoot right handed when I have to, I can a shoot right handed rifle left handed just fine.

Nate, its a gorilla latch.
I haven't made up my mind on the frizzen and it's spring yet. One or both may get replaced.
