Youth Gunmakers' Scholarship sponsored by Muzzleloader Magazine
« on: September 11, 2018, 05:10:43 AM »
For the last three years, Jason Gatliff - editor of Muzzleloader Magazine -  has sponsored a scholarship for the Gunmakers' Workshop. Through his foresight and generosity, along with the the donation of gun parts and materials by generous suppliers and much appreciated  private monetary contributions, several dedicated and very grateful young students have been able to attend the full week's class and learn the fundamentals of longrifle building.

Here is an excerpt from Muzzleloader Magazine which fully describes the parameters of this program:

Dear Readers,

We all know that our hobby needs more young people. To that purpose I was inspired to create the “MUZZLELOADER Magazine Youth Gunbuilding Scholarship.” This will be an annual scholarship to the gunbuilding class offered by Ken Gahagan and Ian Pratt, it is a seven day workshop held at Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp in Jackson, Ohio. The class will be held  January 12 -18, 2019.

The scholarship will cover the cost of the class as well as meals and lodging at Canter’s Cave for the duration of the class. Additionally the required materials, lock, stock, and barrel will be donated for this scholarship, so aside from travel to and from Canter’s Cave there will be no out of pocket expense for the recipient. I would like to thank Larry Zornes (of Mold and Gun Shop) for donating the lock and barrel , Ian Pratt for donating the stock blank, and Paul Hall for inletting the barrel for last January's class (2018).

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 30 and must send in an essay about their interest in muzzleloading and gunbuilding. Please use the essay to answer the following questions: "Are you involved in the muzzleloader culture presently?, what have you done or what are you involved in now, what are you present and future goals, why would you be a good candidate for the scholarship?" The deadline for the essays will be November 1st, 2018 and the winner will be announced on December 1st, 2018 and listed in the January/February 2019 issue. We do ask that you only apply if you are serious about taking the class and can devote seven days to attending as well as provide your own travel.

We will also be accepting monetary donations for the scholarship fund. If you would like to make a donation please mail it to: MUZZLELOADER Magazine, Dept. MMYGS, PO Box 1316, Gallatin, TN 27066.

I'd like to thank Jason Gatliff for continuing to offer this wonderful opportunity for one lucky applicant each year, and also I thank again those who have in previous years donated gun parts or funds to help with the program - your help is greatly appreciated.  Here are a few photos of our last 3 recipients - Noah Miller, Blakely Chambers and Levi Miller. All three were very attentive hard working students ! More info on the class is available at https://www.southernohioartisanworkshops.com/

Just wanted to bring this back to the top - essay deadline is less than a month away! Even if you won't be applying, please share this information if you know somebody who may be interested.

Note that this is a separate scholarship from the one being offered by the KRF (see Ken Gahagan's post on that one in the "sticky" section above)  These are two separate scholarships for the same class. We greatly appreciate the foresight and generosity of both  Jason Gatliff the KRF,  along with those who have made private contributions to Jason's Muzzleloader Magazine scholarship.

The deadline for essays to be turned in is November 1st. If any applicants have questions, you can send Ken or me a PM, or send an email to ohioworkshops@hotmail.com  with "scholarship" as the subject.
