Carving patterns

Any ideas on where some carving patterns could be obtained?

Not going on a rifle but rather on my dutch oven carry box cover.  Thought it would be nice to decorate a bit with some 18th or 19th century patterns.

any help appreciated!

Dover books has some penn dutch patterns, and some american folk art pattern books.
Many of the recent Dover publications come with CD's so you can print out the patterns and do a acetone transfer to the wood.

Go to http://woodworker.com/
Click on wood specialties in the left column
Look at all 5 pages.

There are a number of ornamental carvings.  If you find anything you like, you can save it and then resize it to use as a pattern for your project.

Go to the interlibrary loan service and look for the annuals done by the Penn. Historical society for years 1940 to 1945 (this is my best memory of the year sources, I am thinking it is like '42 and maybe '44?). These have common patterns reproduced in them as well as some good info on the Landis museum's roots, flintlock making, an a few pics of chunk guns if memory is correct.

The folk patterns should go very well with your box project.

As a side the men pictured (Landis) are my great uncles. I use this as my excuse to the wife for the FL interest (obsession?)...it is genetic! ;)

One more wondering...Will this then be a "Pennsylvania" Dutch Oven box??? ::)

Another place to find some three dimensional enlightenment for carving is Home Depot and Lowe's.  Go to their wood stuff and pickup a couple examples  of the glue on scroll pieces used for decorating furniture.  While it isn't the best carving it has helped me visualize a lot of the drawings which are in just two dimensions.   I think Woodcraft has them too.
