A nicely smoothed crown makes starting the tighter combinations much easier. Tighter combinations have shown
much better accuracy for us.
With the normal machine-tool cut crown on a barrel, the result is 2 sharp corners. One at the outward surface of the bore and the other on
the inner edge of the groove bottom and land. This sharp edge will cut into the patch as well as pushing, bunching the lead up instead of
forming it to the rifling. The smooth radius can be made on a lathe or easily done with the end of your thumb and a piece of wet/dry 320 or
emery cloth in 320 grit. Push a piece of cloth down the bore an inch to catch the stone and metal 'grindings'. That piece of cloth or napkin is
easily removed with tweezers, needle-nosed pliers or a hooked dental tool.
