Wedding band in the transition on an octagon to round barrel
« on: October 26, 2018, 02:33:51 AM »
I have too much time on my hands waiting for parts etc......  One is a Rice 43" .54 straight taper octagon to round.....

OK, so, I prefer the wedding band to be in the taper from octagon to round in/on a barrel.  I really don't like those barrels with an abrupt shoulder and then the wedding band cut right in front of that.

Soooooooo....  I am sure there is some HC to which is used for what gun but from a graceful point of view I like it in the taper and I want the taper to transition from octagon to round via the wedding band.

Comments please......

Hi,
Try going to "Tutorials", then "Micellaneous Tutorials" and then click on "English Fowler Tutorial Barrels".

Not sure I understand the question.  The wedding band is always on the transition between oct/round.  That's why it's there.
Maybe some photos would help?

Some of the octagon to round barrels seem to have the end of the octagon, where it transitions to round, quite a bit larger than the wedding band or round part, leaving almost a shoulder at the transition. I machined both of mine so that the end of the octagon and the round just ahead of it are the same diameter, then cut the wedding band into the transition.

Hopefully the photo made sense of my text.

I am talking about "in the transition"  not just put in in front of the octagon, also I am talking about a tapered octagon to round....

Sorta like this?  Otherwise, I'm still wondering what the question is.  Kinda dense I guess?

Ok, here's another tapered barrel, with the bands in the transition.
I have seen the early trade gun barrels that were NOT tapered, and had a big drop to the wedding band.  I am assuming that's the other type you spoke of.  I have a Type G. That has no wedding band as such, but has two round steps to reduce the barrel to its final diameter.

Your top one looks right, I think.  The bottom one I cant tell.

Lets do it this way......  If you place a straight edge steel ruler (etc) on the top flat it will touch the round portion and the wedding band in the taper....as opposed to being high going to the round portion of the barrel.

I can get a picture tomorrow or when my Rice barrel come in.....

Study enough originals and one often comes to the conclusion that there are few hard and fast rules.  Generally guns have a lock, stock, and barrel.  That much is consistent.  If not replicating a specific original, there is a lot of freedom while still staying within the context of the variability in originals.

Here’s another dandy Spanish barrel.  Just a little beyond my ability to replicate.

It may be HC in some cases, but I too prefer a barrel that doesn't have the abrupt shoulder transition from octagon to round. Here is a photo of my smooth rifle barrel. I should have taken the photo with the straight edge farther back on the tapered octagon. The round has less of taper so the straight edge bridges the wedding band a little. With the straight edge mostly on the octagon, it does just touch the wedding band and the round part as Huntschool said in his post.

Something I've always wondered about is how these wedding bands affect the integrity of the barrel. Are they not stress points ?

I’m guessing that on a big bore barrel they are subjected to low pressure and pressure has lowered by the time the ball gets that far.  My understanding is that in some cases barrels were actually made in 2 sections and butt-welded!  How would that pump up your confidence level?

Pukka, PA Dutchman and rich:

Those look like what I am talking about.  I think it has more to do with how the taper is laid out.  As Dutchman said, if he had moved the straight edge back it may well have lined up.  As I said above I think its all in the taper pattern.

rich: that Spanish barrel is fantastic....

Pukka: if the octagon flats hit the back sq. shouldered band dead on, that is what I am talking about.

Remember also...... those original barrels were waaaaaaaay thinner than what are commercially available today.
I guess smokeless powder had not been invented yet.  Otherwise some idiot would have blown one up, then sued the builder for everything he had.
