Militiaman's style knife

1084 steel
8 1/2" x 3/16" x 1 5/16" blade, 13" overall length
forged iron guard, file worked iron bolster
stag handle recycled from an old english carving set
through tang peened over a 1946 silver quarter end cap

Excellent knife.  I don't know, but, I think that is also one heck of a rifleman's knife.....  Just sayin...

Lovely design.  I like the fineness of a fairly large knife.  Too often, knives of this size are over built and heavy.  I admire the craftsmanship and the flat grind following forging.

thank you for the comments.

I have been focusing on improving my forging to get closer to finish and only use a grinder to true up the spine and the profile a little and to remove some of the scale but use files and sand paper for everything else.  I have a belt grinder but while it removes materiel quickly I remove too much too quickly so I like to do it old school on the work bench, it is also somewhat mentally therapeutic.  the File filosophy thread in the shop tools section has been a great reference.

I like the blade but that gloss looking handle makes it look like one of those ubiquitous cheap plastic handled carving set knives. ::)
