The fly recess steals some width from the tumbler notches. One could imagine an extreme example where the fly recess took up 2/3 of the notches. We all agree that would put a lot of stress in the notches and the sear nose. Ok, nobody would do that but it illustrates that the fly adds stress to the interaction between the sear nose and the notch. As suggested above a thicker tumbler body would restore lower stress on sear nose and notches.

Acer's drawing is good, but I will add that the fly only needs to be long enough that it will move out of the way when going into the notches.  Any longer just makes the approach angle that much steeper.  A wider fly is good in that it lowers this angle.  The lock has to be designed for this of course, though.
