I. Patchen over under

Only marking is on the lock. Marked I Patchen. Can't find much about him just thought it was a neat rifle. I picked it up at a flea market Last summer. The single trigger operates both hammers 1 at a time.

 :o :o... Tim,..... well, that's different,... !!! ...so the barrels don't turn, or rotate to top,...???... i see the bottom barrel is a smoothbore,...also two ramrods,..!!! .... always great to gave a spare,...give us some specs,..... CCF,...

The barrels do not rotate. Rifled barrel measures .364 and smooth barrel measures .552. I’m assuming that would be a .32cal rifle and a 28 gauge shotgun. Barrels measure 33” and the overall length is 49”. The guy who sold it to me said he believes it was made around the Kenton Ohio area from what he was told by the family he got it from but has nothing to prove it.

That is cool!  A superposed with single trigger.  Are the hammers the "barrel selector"?

Ira Patchen was trained as a gunsmith in Bath, NY and he moved to Covington, Tioga County, Pa in 1837 to open his gunshop. He was a farmer as well as a gunmaker "and a prominent Odd Fellow "... his wife Christina was the daughter of General Thomas Putnam. Interestingly in 1880, Patchen was the neighbor of Josiah Harding in Covington who made similar over under guns with both a back action lock and also an "under hammer lock". You've got a nice, typical gun by Patchen which, unfortunately is missing the spring steel trigger guard that also serves as the mainspring for the underhammer. Most probably the barrels are lightly stamped by the commercial barrel maker  "B. LOSEY" near the breech

*** I removed the gun shown below thinking it was an underhammer which is against our rules. Actually its both a sidelock and an under-hammer so I guess it halfway meets our rules :) so I am putting it back with the sidelock side showing. Dennis ALR Admin***

Tim, If you GOOGLE  Tioga County history and also the various census reports from Covington,Pa from 1850 to 1880 you can dig out some family history. I haven't seen much elsewhere on Ira Patchen.   Attached is his "Find A Grave" info.

Muzzleloader builders supply sells a trigger guard mainspring. I ordered one it looks like it needs a little modification but I think it will work. I’ll update when I receive the part

Thanks Mark. The triggerguard from muzzleloaders supply wasn't anything close to what I needed. The leaf spring took about an hour to shape and fit.
